Derek and I like to say goodbye to the passing year / hello to the new year with dedicated activities. In years past we have visited the zoo, aquarium, one of our city's beautiful parks, and museums. This year we decided to take the kids and pups on a nearby hike. We have every intention on raising our boys as outdoor kids, rain or shine, winter or summer. And now that they are both at the age where we don't have to tote them on our backs in hiking packs we knew it was time for a family hike. The boys and I have done small, 1/2-ish mile hikes, however this was the longest for both of them. They did great! Linc even proclaimed, "Hiking is my most favorite activity!" Happy New Year, lovely people.

These flew over our home last weekend, and not two minutes after watching them disappear behind the trees we received a text from Derek's mom that they had just watched a couple of balloons take off from a cafe down the road from them! Goes to prove that 1. Living in the country is a-maz-ing, 2. Living super close to Gma and Gpa G is awesome and 3. My boys like to be in their birthday suits. Okay, overhead dusk-time balloons has nothing to do with my boys and their fondness for being in the buff, but all lists need at least three items, no? :)

This past weekend, as a belated Christmas gift to my mother in law, we took the kids to the University of Washington to get their pictures taken by a professional photographer. We met Derek's sister and her family and I decided it was a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the cousins together, the cherry trees in bloom, and spring-timey excitement. We discovered a new favorite park this past weekend, Lake Union Park. Such a gem in what used to be an ignored part of Seattle. It is home to the Center for Wooden Boats, has amazing views of Seattle's most famous landmarks, you'll run into locals and tourists discussing the weather, and it's the best place to see float planes take off and land. Here Lincoln learns how to sail a boat with one of the CWB's volunteers.

I have often wondered if I should be more anonymous with my blog, specifically my children's names, birthdays, and our location. Am I putting them at risk by publishing so much information about them? I have friends whose blogs get more traffic, and who post as much, if not more about their children, than I do about Lincoln and Miles. Since they feel safe with the information they publish, should I feel the same? Our world is hardly anonymous anymore and I can't imagine that my little photo project draws much attention, or would solicit any harmful behavior towards my children. Still, it often gives me pause to think that this place for sharing pictures, stories and my thoughts could in someway have an adverse effect on my family. For now, however, I do not have any plans to change the format of things, or the publicity of my blog. Just being an aware and concerned mama.

This summer we took a trip with my sister and her family to a village in the mountains of British Columbia. We spent our days swimming, cycling, horseback riding and being tourists. Derek got to rekindle his love of mountain biking and my sister and I got to spend one morning trail riding on some of the most gorgeous and friendly horses I have ever met. One guess where we went.

The Smith Tower. Located in Pioneer Square, Seattle, it once claimed to be the tallest building in the world, outside of New York City. Now home to retail and office spaces, as well as rental facilities for weddings and other grand events. Its view is impeccable and definitely rivals another touristy hot spot's view.

Meet BJ the clown, performing at an annual family camping event, hosted by one of Derek's cousins and her family in south-western Washington. Her family generously opens their house and property to as many guests that want to come for a long weekend of camping, swimming, riding their zip line and tractors, as well as campfires and late-night poker games. In the first picture below, you can see that none of the kids were fooled on where BJ's snake was hiding.

This is art. I first noticed this leaning house driving eastbound, and anticipated seeing it again westbound. The first three pictures are from our way to the reunion, and the last three are from our way home to Seattle. I love that the property owners have purposely left the old house standing. They could have torn it down years ago, but instead saw the sentimental value in leaving this little beauty standing.

Being on a lake we spent the majority of our time on the water. In the below pictures Jace, my brother-in-law, and Shannon, my sister, are wake boarding, and Derek is water skiing. The skis Derek are on are over 20 years old. I water skied on them growing up and it is amazing he was able to get up on them. We'll upgrade to some news ones by next year. Way to go, babe!

For the past two years our annual family reunion has been held in Sun River, Oregon. However, with half of the contingent in Washington state, and all of us ready to try something new, this year we all met up at Sunbanks Lake Resort, just outside of Electric City. This year was one of the larger turnouts with 25 adults and 15 children. Unfortunately I did not get my usual group shot, but I was giving myself a break from my usual shutter-happy tendencies. One of the highlights was a trip to the Grand Coulee Dam. With its massive size and power it is definitely a site to behold. Pictures of that below.

With so many pictures from Lincoln's birthday party, and so many I wanted to share, I just completed a string of collages. I have already decided how I will do them in the future: less busy, more space between the pictures. Below are some pictures of Lincoln and his buddy Sophie. We met Sophie's parents in a birthing class while pregnant with Linc and Soph. We became fast friends and have remained close ever since. These two always seem to have a blast together; their personalities complement each other perfectly. The tent/tipi was Linc's gift from us for his first birthday.

For a lot of the kids, the highlight of the party were some special guests Lincoln's grandparents hired: ponies! Not all kids were as eager to hop on the ponies as others, but everyone had a great time watching, petting and letting them eat apple and carrot snacks out of their palms. Other entertainment included croquet daddy-style (invented wickets and one of the rules included if your child picked up and moved your ball, you had to play from there!), and kid-friendly hot tub temperatures for swimming. That's Derek's dad in the hot tub collage, he roasted all the corn for corn-on-the-cob, and veggies for our paninis. Thanks, Lee!
